Interesting that each of these women has recently made a big change by chopping several inches off her hair. Could it be that the new coif of choice is the shoulder-length, layered bob? Will this trend last as long as the Jennifer-Aniston-stick-straight-long-locks look did? Did you cut your hair yet?

Personally, I think Nicole Richie has the most stylish haircut of the newly shorn set, followed by JLo. The lines in their cuts are very modern and versatile. Alba's cut is really cute, but it's not as fresh, in my opinion. JLo and Nic look like it takes five minutes to do their hair, and that appeals to me greatly!

Nicole Richie: hairstyle trendsetter

Admit it, you love Nicole Richie. Even those of you who couldn't get past her multi-colored extensions, back in the day, love her now that she's chic. And she is chic, baby. Her new hairstyle is a bonafide sensation. BeautyRiot is getting loads of requests for it. We only added a photo gallery for her two days ago, and she's already ranking in the top three most popular celebs in the site. The updo pictured here is the most popular of her looks.

And here's a confession for you: I, myself, got my hair cut to match Nicole's just about two months ago. The next thing I knew, JLo and Brittany Murphy were following suit! Fortunately, I'm a newly minted redhead, so I have a look all my own. Which is important, isn't it, Darling?

You know who should go back to a shorter, chicer style? That's right: Paris. She should, shouldn't she?!

It's true: Natalie Portman's bald!

I do believe BeautyRiot.com will be the first place that you'll see this. Natalie Portman showed up in Cannes with a shaved head. This photo was taken today, May 15. We haven't learned yet why she went for it, but could it be part of the recent trend of people donating their hair to children with cancer who've lost their own hair due to treatments? If we find out, I'll update this post.

Short and chic

It's official, there's a trend. First Jessica Simpson, then Nicole Richie and Jessica Alba. Now Jennifer Lopez and Ashlee Simpson. What have they all done? They've all recently cut several inches from their hair and begun sporting shoulder-length or shorter blunt styles (usually with a side part and long bangs). It's a refreshing change, no?

Ashlee Simpson one-upped everybody by not only going shorter, but going lighter... and then lighter again. What could be next?

I have to confess that, as BeautyRiot.com's editor in chief, I get warm and fuzzy when a major celebrity changes her hairstyle. It sends thousands and thousands of women in search of pictures and instructions, and they find what they're seeking at BeautyRiot.com.

When Ashlee Simpson cut her hair into that fresh shag and dyed it chocolate brown, it literally caused a sensation with BeautyRiot visitors. We've never before had so many emails asking about how to get a hairstyle.

Then Jessica Simpson got her adorable layered bob, and that hairstyle alone generated more pageviews on BeautyRiot than any other 'do.

Blonde and Blonder

While lots of celebs are going darker with their haircolor these days, there are also a couple of notable stars going blonde. "Sin City" star, Jessica Alba has been blonde for a while now.Click here to see a photo gallery of her hairstyles and haircolors.

Of course, when a gal's hair is as naturally dark as Jessica's, it was only a matter of time before she had to chop off a lot of length in order to shed the damage done. The new haircut is cute... but of course, Jessica is cute.

Here is someone who's been dyeing her hair a rich red. Going blonde from there is never easy and often isn't possible. The damage can be seen in the lack of shine and lustre in Lindsay's hair.

Now, it's likely that both these women have made haircolor changes for film roles. But we mortals can learn vicariously from their hair experiences. Some people just aren't meant to be blonde. Blonde isn't an immediate option, sometimes (for instance, Lohan would have benefited from growing out her red dyed locks first, before lightening).

Personally, I'll be glad to see both Jess and Lin get back to warmer haircolors. Imagine how sophisticated Jessica Alba's new bob haircut would look in a glossy chocolate brown. And, of course, Lindsay Lohan set herself totally apart when she went with red--as a blonde, she looks more like one of the crowd.
